Celtic looked set to announce a double signing today. However, that now seems as though that will be a single signing.
Vasilio Barkas’ move from AEK Athens is all but concluded. The Greek international goalkeeper is without a doubt Neil Lennon’s highest priority.
Having lost Craig Gordon and later let down by Fraser Forster, Barkas has be pursued by Celtic as they look the plug our biggest gap. He looks the part with international and European experience, age on his side and potenial sell on value.
If this deal is all sealed today, I’ll feel much easier about first team matters. With the greatest respect to Scott Bain, I do not think he is a standout number one just yet, but a more than able backup.
At the other end of the field, Albian Ajeti’s so-called loan deal is on hold. The Swiss international is said to be back in his homeland mulling over this move.
It’s a disappointing development given how our transfer dealings have gone so far this season. However, the deal isn’t dead yet.
Personally, I think this guy could be worth the wait. His stats at FC Basel were impressive, but the West Ham venture has not worked out.
So it’s not difficult to understand why a 23 year old might want to think over another move to another league so soon after the first move didn’t go so well. He may think going back home is the better alternative, but we will wait and see what happens over the next couple of days.
One player who Celtic appear to have cooled their interest in is Ivan Toney. His name has been banded about for weeks, but the valuation set by Peterborough, a third tier English club, is completely unrealistic.
My name sake in the Daily Mail has reported that Celtic bid £4M for the striker last Friday. This was rejected and it seems Celtic then pursued Ajeti instead.
Whatever Peterborough are asking for their player, it may be more than Celtic are willing to pay for a player who has yet to play at the highest level. For that reason alone, I’d rather wait for Ajeti to think this move over.
He has played at the top level with the stats to go with it. With a loan and option to buy it seems like a risk free move, should he agree.
I’m hoping that today we will see our first proper transfer completed. It’s an important one.
