Contrary to my blog of a couple of weeks ago, it now seems that Dedrcyk Boyata will indeed be going to the World Cup after all. As ever, I check my facts before venting my spleen, but on this occasion it appears I was wrong.
Some World Cup squads were provisional, some finalised and others not released. My recollection was that although Belgium hadn’t finalised their 23 man squad, Boyata wasn’t even in the provisional 28 man squad.
Seems I was wrong about that totally. More importantly, it now transpires the big man has made the final 23 man squad!
So, I’m not only wrong once, but twice! Several reports last week stated that mattresses being sent to Russia for the Belgian players were seen with Belgian players names on them – Boyata being one of those names.
The squad announcement hadn’t yet been made, but this appears to have been genuine and now confirmed. I have to say, I’m really pleased to have been wrong.
He’s not my ideal choice at centre back for Celtic, but this will be a boost for him personally. It will be an invaluable learning experience to play at the World Cup and will benefit both himself and Celtic.
Brendan Rodgers reckons he is his best defender. I’m not sure I’m of the same opinion because his bomb scare moments are still fresh in my mind.
Having said that, he has improved under Brendan. The question for the Celtic manager is how to settle that back line.
The World Cup will either bring Boyata to the attention of other interested clubs or help him retain a place at Celtic. Either way, it is win-win for us.
So now he will be joining Mikael Lustig, Tom Rogic and Cristian Gamboa in Russia. I look forward to watching these Bhoys with great interest.
